We are finally ready to announce that Sami Hyypiä is joining our ranks as our international Brand Ambassador. Read our little recap of his successful career below and also be sure to check out what the upcoming year as a Betsson Ambassador will have in store for him.
The Finnish football manager and former defender Sami Hyypiä will be joining the Swedish elite swimmer and Olympic gold medallist Sarah Sjöström as one of our Brand Ambassadors this year. In this article we would like to introduce the man a bit better, so now it’s time to step away from the turquoise swimming pools and run onto the football pitch with Hyypiä.
Obviously, our new Brand Ambassador’s name is already known worldwide, but let us still revise some of the greatest achievements in his career so far. Hyypiä’s career in the top divisions spans almost 20 years, and during this time he has represented teams in Finland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany.
He has carried home trophies from cups such as the Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and the English League Cup. He has been named the Finnish Footballer of the Year numerous times and has even borrowed his name to the Finnish football training, research and development center Sami Hyypiä Academy. But how did his career actually start and what does the future hold for him? And most importantly what kind of tips and insights is Sami going to tell us?
A short recap of Hyypiä’s career
Sami Hyypiä spent his childhood years in Voikkaa, Kuusankoski, and at the tender age of 7 he joined his local football club Pallo-Peikot. Sami’s love and passion for sports was clear and not only did Sami love football, he was also interested in cross-country skiing and ice hockey. Luckily for us, he decided to focus on football instead. Hyypiä also played in the ranks of Kuusankosken Kumu and Myllykosken Pallo before starting his international career in the Dutch club Willem II in 1995.
After three and a half successful seasons with the Eredivisie team, the young footballer’s talents were soon noticed in the UK and it wasn’t long before he was wearing the famous red Liverpool jersey. In the spring of 2001 Sami became a house hold name in the UK as Hyypiä helped Liverpool bring home a treble victory: The FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.
Hyypiä successes in the red jersey continued, and in 2005 Liverpool beat AC Milan in the thrilling Champions league final. This win helped cement Hyypiä into the history books as the second Finnish football player ever to win the cup.
The Finnish football player spent 10 years in the red jersey, leading the team for a few of those years as captain. In 2009 he changed teams to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, before hanging up his for boots for good at the end of the 2011 season.
Not surprisingly football was still on Hyypiä’s mind after he finished his professional career on pitch. The natural step was to start a career as a football manager. Since then he has coached the National team in Finland, Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, Brighton in the UK and finally FC Zurich in Switzerland.
